Fangirl Feelings (skip this section if you don’t want spoilers)

My expectations hopping into “Idol I” were fairly low! Considering I’d watched Lovely Runner a few months ago and I’ve avoided any marketing for the series, there wasn’t too much that I anticipated going into the show.

From episode one, the series does an excellent job of setting up the dynamic of the characters even without revealing too much about who they really are. If you’re like me and also like to make ending predictions, then you might’ve guessed who the killer was just based on all the information presented in this episode, but more on that later!

The Story

The narrative itself wasn’t terrible. The series leaned more into law rather than being a romance though. However, don’t go into this expecting Beyond The Bar (or even Legally Blonde) level law-content. It is much more subtle than that, focusing on how the law impacts the people around it.

This borderlines on slice of life/coming of age, but it almost isn’t that either. Truthfully, the premise focused on the leads and side characters identifying their own shortcomings and how they want to shape the world around them. I can’t say that I explicitly know what genre that would be, but I don’t believe every drama has to perfectly squeeze into a category to be good. Sometimes, it is truly about the lessons that people can pull from the series.

The Characters

Overall, I really enjoyed (and hated) all of the characters. Se-na’s prosecutor opponent Byeong-gyun stood out as having the best growth in the show as he defied his father’s past and forged his own to seek the truth and live a life he was proud of.

Se-na’s character was so relatable to many fangirls (myself included!). Her day job funds the life that she really loves to live behind closed doors: a super fangirl of the group Gold Boys! She has a huge heart for others, as she gave one of her former clients a place to stay to get back on his feet. Admittedly though, there wasn’t anything particularly memorable about this character. She simply did the right thing, and quite literally influenced all the men around her to become better.

On the other hand, there’s Do Ra-ik. The pretty boy idol with the perfect smile… *sigh* why’d he have to be so misunderstood. His growth arc (and did I say great smile?) was very fun to watch, but we never truly know how he felt about his fangirls in the end. He loves the one that helped him (Se-na), but where does he stand with everyone else?

Se-na and Ra-ik’s love story doesn’t fully begin to materialize into very late into the series. The slow burn was enjoyable to watch though because you understand how he doesn’t want to love a “fan,” while she certainly cannot love a client publicly. The two are pushed in separate directions until they couldn’t deny it any further, which ultimately fed my fangirl delulu REAL BAD!

The Murder Mystery

HUGE SPOILERS SO GO WATCH AND COME BACK!!

Anywho… I personally felt that it was obvious who the actual killer was from episode one. The crazy ex-girlfriend being at Laik’s fansign event then suddenly gone, which sends him into a full-fledged panic attack. Absolutely, she was the obvious killer without even knowing the full context.

My conviction swayed back and forth between the CEO, the group Manager and her for awhile, but by the end of episode 8, I’d been convinced. She would’ve never gotten away with it because of the phone recordings (good job Woo-young!), but she was definitely one of the more interesting characters in the show because there was a lot of emotion there. Too bad, she never received the love she needed. Oh well.

Should I watch “Idol I”?

This is my honest answer:

If you want a legal, murder mystery, this has elements of it, but it isn’t JUST that.

If you’re looking for a deep, dramatic romance, it is probably closer to that, but also doesn’t fully it the mark either. There would be other series that I’d recommend for that.

Truthfully, “Idol I” is a drama here to feed the fangirl delusions. It sheds light into the dark side of an industry that so many follow and worship.

The series has an undeniable message about truth, love and how far one will go to seek these knowing your own personal ambitions. It’s simply a fun watch that doesn’t have to be the greatest series ever released; some shows are there to fill a gap. I’d say “Idol I” does that well.

My Star Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ [7] Stars
Would I rewatch? No
